As a failsafe, if the Phantom 2 and its controller disconnects during flight, the system's failsafe protection will come to the rescue- and if the signal is good enough, the Phantom 2 will return home and automatically land. You can also program a one key go home function through the Assistant software.
The included Zenmuse H3-2D 2-axis gimbal is a motorized stabilizer for mounting a GoPro HERO3 or HERO3+ action digital camera. This gimbal helps isolate the camera from vibration incurred by the rotors, giving you the smoothest possible aerial video. Plus, it allows the camera to tilt between -130 to +50 degrees with a precision of 0.08 degrees. Tilting is controlled by an attachment that's located on the back of the included transmitter.
The DJI Phantom 2 Quadcopter comes with a 6-channel, 2.4GHz transmitter (TX) which is pre-bound to the aircraft. The transmitter features an operational range extending up to 3,280' line-of-sight, depending on weather conditions. The controls are configured in "Mode 2", which is easily the most popular mode among RC pilots in the U.S.
The Phantom 2 relies on a GPS-based navigation, as well as gimbal, compass, and other data to maintain flight stability and provide other assisted-flying features. While fully manual operation is possible (and can be unlocked using the Naza Assistant Software), most users will opt for GPS or GPS Attitude flight mode. While in GPS Mode, the Naza system keeps the Phantom 2 right-side-up and stable when moving, and holds it in a fixed vertical or horizontal position whenever you release the sticks.
Brand new for this model, DJI's Phantom 2 features a 5200 mAh LiPo battery system that has been greatly simplified from the previous Phantom version. The battery features four LED indicators visible on the outside, tail-end of the aircraft helping you keep track of battery levels in flight. This LiPo also slots in without having to connect any DC leads. Charging has also simplified, with all of the charging circuitry now built into the battery itself; there's no separate balance lead to worry about plugging in. However, due to this design, the Phantom 2 battery cannot be charged with all-purpose balance chargers, only chargers that have been specifically made for it.
For a complete first-person view (FPV) experience you will probably want to add a wireless video transmitter. Because the Wi-Fi system on the GoPro operates on the same 2.4GHz band as the Phantom 2's transmitter it may cause interference with aircraft operation and should never be used. Instead an option such as DJI's own AVL58 5.8 GHz Video Link Kit, or a third-party solution that can be set to 5 GHz or higher, may be used for live video transmission.
