Don't forget to tighten slipper on Brushless E-maxx, Especially if running 6S!

Posted by G Gennadiy on Jul 27th 2017

So I got a brand new Brushless E-maxx with a dual 3s 5000mah battery set and was anxious for my first run. Like any normal person, I completely ignored the manual and warnings during the unboxing. The batteries were charged and I was ready to tear up my yard. My buddy warned me that I should break in the transmission before ripping it on full throttle, Again, like any normal person, I completely ignored his warnings. I drove it slowly for the first 10 minutes to get the hang of how the truck handles, then I figured that was enough of a break-in period and decided to unleash the beast! The raw power and torque of the truck were absolutely exhilarating... for about 5 minutes. For some reason the truck completely stopped moving, the motor roared, but the truck was stagnant. Naturally, I was very upset and prematurely started badmouthing Traxxas about how their overpriced products don't even last 30 minutes without breaking down. I took the truck inside and started to search for the root of the problem. I unscrewed the transmission case and found a completely mauled and melted spur gear. The slipper clutch got so hot that it melted a perfect circle in the center of the gear, and the pinion gear finished it off. This is when I decided to thoroughly read the manual to find out the cause of the damage. Apparently you have to break in the slipper clutch with a Ni-Cad or 4s power system, and tighten the slipper clutch after the break in period. Thankfully, I only broke the spur gear and I was relieved to find it on R/C planet for under 3 Bucks! I immediately ordered it and had my truck running again in under a week. Haven't had problem with this spur gear since! I hope my story has helped you in some way, Good Luck!
